What to expect: Opened in fall 2002, this resort in the Gila River Indian Community is designed with earth-colored stucco exteriors and interiors featuring artwork by Native Americans. One wing of the resort uses Pima decorative motifs; the other, Maricopa. In the glass-walled lobby, museum cases display traditional handiwork. Telephone operators, who answer "How can I care for you?," echo local hospitality traditions. Amenity highlights: Attractions include two 18-hole golf courses, tennis courts, horseback riding, four outdoor swimming pools, and an 111-foot waterslide. The 17,500-square-foot Aji (meaning sanctuary) spa and fitness center offers a full array of body and beauty treatments, spa, sauna, and exercise classes amid elegant surroundings decorated with dark woods, leather couches, plush fabrics, and muted desert colors. Insider tip: Regularly scheduled one-hour walking tours explore the various artworks and architectural significance of the resort. The Huhugam Heritage Center, a museum that includes Native American archaeological collections, art exhibits, classes, and a gift shop, is 1 mile away.
