What to expect: Stylish in the Hawaiian manner, which is to say without pretentiousness, The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach attracts guests for whom a Hawaiian vacation is a memorable event for which they're willing to pay a little extra so they'll be where the action is. Amenity highlights: Off the upper lobby, a 430-seat showroom serves as the permanent residence of the long-running comedy/musical revue "Society of Seven." Off the lower lobby, locals and visitors alike pack Duke's Canoe Club, Waikiki's most popular nightspot. Duke's runs the beachfront-width of the hotel, and it's always full. Younger patrons crowd the koa-wood-paneled interior for drinks and food. Older patrons gravitate to the breezy flagstone terrace by the beach, where tiki torches and spotlights create a tropical scene of sand, water, and palm trees more perfect than a postcard. Insider tip: All OHANA and Outrigger hotels in Waikiki offer interchangeable hospitality. Guests at any hotel are invited to enjoy dining, entertainment, and facilities at the other hotels?including the Serenity Spa (health and beauty) and Cowabunga Kids Club at The Outrigger Reef on the Beach?while charging to their rooms. Exceptions are that the pool at this hotel is reserved for hotel guests and the fitness center at The Outrigger Reef on the beach is reserved for hotel guests and for Outrigger Waikiki Shore guests. Bonus tip: At the entrance of Duke's Canoe Club in the evenings, a lovely, sweet, soft-spoken Hawaiian woman creates leis in dazzling variety for reasonable prices. Some she makes of blossoms so exotic they seem to come from another, more perfect universe. Some are of blossoms so intoxicatingly fragrant as to make drinking a mail tai unnecessary.
